the wisdom of buying into the stock market now?

I’m a college student, and I have some built up savings that I’m thinking about investing. My parents are taking care of my tuition and board, so my job here at school covers my cost of living.

From what I hear, there is always a dramatic upturn in the market after it bottoms out. That, coupled with a probable Obama presidency (I think) makes alternative energy companies a good bet.

I’m avoiding mutual funds for now, I already have a substantial stake there, and I’ve taken a bath the last year.

buying mutual funds?

I’m new to investing but about to invest on some mutual funds portfolios but i don’t really understand reading the performance.
There are a few things I notice, “YTD”, “1 YR” “2 YR” etc.
Currently most of the YTD are negative/red but 1 YR are positive/green.
Which one is the most important indicator among these before we buy funds?
I believe everyone objective is gain profits with less risks.

Thanks in advance!!!
Are you saying since this year most of funds are red will be a good time to buy? or wait until even higher red before buying?
Also, is that mean if one funds (let say AAAA already at the peak for the last 3 years, we wont get more?

Build Wealth by Green Investing

In today’s depressive stock market it is hard to find a silver lining. Green investing is a way to feel good about your stocks and mutual funds while having the potential to make a healthy return on investment. Socially responsible investing makes sense during the corruption on Wall Street and the search for alternative energy sources.
Green investing is finally coming into the mainstream. People can do what’s right for the environment and build wealth too! Socially responsible investing has been around for decades and is now becoming popular. SRI already has $2.3 trillion in investments. SRI started by appealing to investors who wanted to avoid sin stocks, the stocks of companies that are involved in alcohol, tobacco, and gambling.

Today, Social Responsible Investing is an all encompassing term that generally means screening companies out that are abusive to the environment, practice poor labor relations, are not responsible to their communities and lack corporate integrity. SRI has evolved to serve in an advocacy manner. The new focus by consumers, business and government on sustainability and the environment has created its own category of SRI. Goldman Sachs, the darling of Wall Street, has already set aside $1.5 billion to privately invest in green companies. CalPERS; one of the country’s largest institutional investors, has set aside more than a billion dollars for green investments.

Are any of my atheist buddies financial planners?

I’m looking for socially responsible mutual funds for my 401k, but many talk about “sin” and being religious-based. My concerns are more about environmental responsibility, human rights, and I will be looking at CEO salaries in relation to the lowest paid employee. It’s it’s more than 10 or maybe even 20 times what the lowest paid employee makes, I don’t think I want to support them. Do any of you know of any funds that take such matters into consideration without putting an emphasis on religion?
Thom, yeah… I was surprised aboutthe sin thing, too, but they’r out there. They don’t invest in alcohol companies, for example… and being on here makes me have to drink on that monkey question, so…

But as for the CEO salaries, I find it obscene that a CEO could earn more in a day than one of his employees will earn in a year. Of course CEOs need to be paid at a higher rate, but I consider it unethical to pay yourself such a massive amount of money while barely giving others a living wage. I’m not suggestiong socialism here, but I am saying that I do not feel comfortable supporting a corporate policy that allows many to struggle while affording 4k shower curtains to another. If the lowest paid FT employee make 20k per anum, I just think that there should be some pretty compelling reasons to pay the CEO more than 400k. Yes, the CEO has a lot to do with how well a company does, but the employees also make a few contributions and a responsible company recognizes that fact.
Gee Waman…. long and laborious, indeed! Ugh!

The department for Energy and Climate Change has recently published the UK Renewable Energy Strategy. In this article I take a closer look at what this means for development projects in the UK.

Since the Planning and Energy Act came into force in 2008, local authorities have the power to require that development proposals will meet ambitious energy performance standards. Firstly they can require that the energy performance of buildings is greater than that required by the building regulations. Furthermore the planning authority may require that a proportion of the energy that is used by the new development will be produced on the development site by using renewable sources. Many local authorities have now adopted policies that require that a certain percentage of the energy use of new development will be generated on the site using low or zero carbon technologies. A description of the selected mix of technologies and the rational behind them is laid down in an Energy Statement.
