An entire book could be written about the happy conspiracy between corporate managers and the investment community that pads both pockets at the expense of the everyday shareholder. In fact, one has been written. You should check out “The Battle for the Soul of American Capitalism” by John Bogle, the founder of the Vanguard Group. Bogle has been one of the few mutual fund industry luminaries that publicly decry the abuse taking place. It is an easy read. Check it out. Many of my top ten reasons are touched on in this book.

Over fifty percent of corporate America is owned by the top 100 financial fiduciaries. One would think that this alone would make them the most vigilant voices in the boardroom. In fact, few mutual funds demand accountability from management, and in many of the most egregious cases, they are guilty of downright aiding and abetting the fudging of numbers and the looting of otherwise good corporations. Why? Two glaring conflicts of interest prevent the industry from becoming the activists that they should become.

I’m a young working computer professional with a growing investment portfolio. I take most of my financial adviser’s advice on what funds to pick, but he’s put a substantial amount of my investment money into Asian mutual funds. Given some the geopolitical issues with China and Chinese products (China’s growing military spending, North American trade deficits, China’s poor environmental policy, and a growing track record of unsafe/dangerous products — toothpaste, pet food, toys, etc, etc), I’ve gotten to the point where I consider holding these investments to be, at best, somewhat unethical. This is not a financially motivated question; It’s an ethical one. I would like some advice/guidance on what would be good investments into North American companies dedicated to developing the products and technology of greener future. I’m still looking for returns on my investments dollars, but I’d like to know I’m part of the solution, not the problem. What are the right investments for me?

Buying stocks of alternative energy sources?

Hi people,

I got interested in companies producing alternative energy sources or equipment for that industry and I have two questions:

2. could you name some companies in this sector?

Alternative energy would be wind, solar, methanol, petrol produced out of plants and similar sources

Over the last few years the new in vouge investment idea, socially responsible investing has a lot of interest. As environmental issues become more and more prevalent it’s a natural progression. In very simplistic terms socially responsible investing is an investment approach that allows you, the investor, to invest your funds in companies that commonly invest in ways that are compatible with your beliefs. Investing in environmental friendly funds that you support would be a good example of this. As these issues become more important to us, socially responsible investing will become even more popular.

The most common way to invest when it comes to socially responsible investing is through what’s called a sector fund. Sector funds as the name implies focuses its investment objectives in a particular sector. Sector funds are best known for their focus on popular areas. These areas commonly include oil, technological areas, or any other hot sector at the time. Thus, they can be a very valuable tool, allowing you to invest in any area you see fit. So, if an area is hot like real estate was over the last few years you could take advantage of that with a sector fund. Many speculators are currently taking advantage of the rising oil sector. As these trends come to an end, sector funds allow you to move to the next hot area, and so on.

Renewable Energy and Solar Power

Hi-tech ways to capture enough sunlight per day every day to power everything in a home or business hasn’t been discovered yet. The current cost of solar panels can run into thousands of pounds, which would require the panels to produce electricity for years without maintenance in order to see a return on investment. What is needed is more grants available to people to enable them to afford renewable energy in the homes. Otherwise only the relatively well off will be able to afford paying over £2000 for solar panels and then saving money over the next 10-20 years. B & Q and other retailers in the UK have now started to advertise solar and wind turbines on TV, they must becoming more mainstream for them to do this.

Sustainable investment options are set to become more attractive in the long run with the incorporation of the eco-stimulus. Currently, green stocks are showing stable returns on investments and investors who care about how and where their money is being used are opting for the “go green” option.

Investment can be a great way of making money if done in a logical and systematic manner. In the last few years, significant changes have been visible in the interest of investors across the world. Other than oil and gas, interest has deviated to sources of energy as it causes less harm to the environment and society. Thanks to the increased awareness on sustainable investment opportunities, several companies across the world are realizing the importance to preserve and protect the planet.
